Self-presentation is about taking charge of the impression others have of you in social interactions. You will learn ways to present your best self and how to introduce yourself formally and informally in English.

In today’s climate, adaptability is key to success and growth. In this hands-on, practical course, you will learn the language and skills required to create and deliver expert face-to-face and online presentations.

A core question we will address is: “How can I present myself in a way that will appeal to the most people possible in my core audience?” We will learn the difference between presenting our authentic, ideal, and tactical selves and how to integrate all three.

You will deliver a presentation and receive feedback on both language and performance while developing and enhancing speaking and writing skills. In addition, the course offers tools to use the English language in multicultural settings, identify personal strengths, and make the best first impression when networking. You will learn how to use Flipgrid to create a short video and how to answer the quintessential question, “Tell me about yourself.”

You will reflect on the value of knowledge gained in the course and use rubrics to analyze (1) your class participation and (2) your presentations. You will receive a resource bank of web resources to facilitate further study.

End-of-Course Certificate will be awarded.

This is an interactive course with 5 online (synchronous) meetings of two academic hours each and 4 sessions of self-directed study (asynchronous learning) as well as individual and collaborative work.

Goals: By the end of the course, you will be able to

  • introduce and present yourself in 30 seconds (Elevator Pitch).
  • identify personal strengths to make the best first impression.
  • answer the question: Tell me about yourself.
  • increase awareness of methods of delivering engaging presentations.
  • improve fluency (speed and accuracy) and confidence when speaking and presenting.
  • practice and refine the art of networking.
